Collecting Critters #2 -- Loricorn

I love collecting hand knitted Critters and today I thought I’d share one of my oldest critters, Loricorn.  Loricorn was made by one of my co-workers, Megan, who is incredibly talented with making critters.  The first critter she made me was “Puggie.”  (More on Puggie later.  He might be in an upcoming critter collection post.)

You might notice that Loricorn looks a lot like candy corn. I find people either like candy corn or they don’t, but candy corn makes a nice a little treat when you need a pick me up. Candy corn season usually starts in late August and runs through October. I usually get 2 or 3 bags from the local grocery store and make some snack size bags which I place on my console at work for my co-workers to stop by and pick up a bag when a sugar fix is required.

While Loricorn looks like candy corn, she got her name from another co-worker  (Lori) who likes to make popcorn and share her popcorn with us.  Her popcorn is usually pretty good – it’s just movie theatre butter flavor and no one can turn down a bag, so I decided to name my little after my co-worker, hence, Loricorn.

Loricorn’s favorite season is the fall & winter and Megan has been gracious enough to make a couple of hats for Loricorn to keep her little head warm.  Loricorn also likes Christmas and getting gifts.  Lately, Loricorn has been hanging at the house, but August and candy corn season is just around the corner so she’ll be heading off to work to spread more good cheer.

Question for you:  Candy corn – do you love it or hate it?

CHRISTMAS IN JULY HIGHLIGHTED STORY:

Christmas in Bayeux is now available on Amazon as a .99 ebook and has been featured in Bargin Booksy ads.

BLURB:

Aiden is searching for that something he can’t define.  After spending time in Iraq and losing his parents, he travels to France looking for that undefined something to give meaning to his life. Aiden reconnects with the one that got away, Noelle Rousseau, and quickly discovers that having purpose has ignited his life in a way he never thought possible.

Noelle is trying to make ends meet. After giving up teaching to run a bed and breakfast, she’s learning that new challenges can be daunting, even with help from her friends.  When Aiden steps back into her life, she learns that trust is not only rewarding, but scary.

Aiden thrives as he helps Noelle prepare for the Christmas season, but can both of them learn to trust, hope, and believe that love will offer them a future if they can only dare to believe?

EXCERPT (Aiden and Noelle meet):

He didn’t think he could come to Bayeux if Noelle wasn’t here. He parked the car. The clouds above suspended the snow. A couple milled past the church on the sidewalk. Bayeux was a quiet town.

Aiden allowed a small smile to escape the corners of his lips. Since he’d last seen her nine years ago, she had gotten taller. Her brown hair peeked out from her cap, flecked with copper highlights. Her cobalt eyes pierced his defenses now, just as they had before. He took a long breath.  Despite the heavy clothes, she was stunning.  He hadn’t anticipated that.

Her eyes swept over him and then sparked with recognition. “Aiden!”

            “Bonjour, Noelle!”

She wrapped her arms around him and gave him a quick hug. “Bonjour!”

Her warm glow infused him, cracking a stiff battlement. Her genuine embrace filled him with a spark of a feeling, something other than numbness, but he had no word for the feeling. He took a step back and offered a small smile. “It’s good to see you, Noelle. You’ve changed…”

“Oh, I was just a girl when I was an exchange student in your house.”

            “You were sixteen.”

Her cheeks reddened. “Oui– now I am a woman. How are your parents?”

Collecting her purse, she walked into the lobby as Drake descended the stairs. He presented her with a manila envelope.

"I'll look it over and give it to my lawyers to examine."

"When might you make a decision?"

"Give me a week."

He escorted her to her car and paused near the door. Lily unlocked it with her remote and leaned over, placing her purse along with the folder in the passenger seat. When she stood back up, Drake was directly in front of her. He cupped her cheek, his hand warm and encouraging. "When can I see you again?"

Her abdomen ached for more as waves of desire washed over her. Lily craved closer contact, but she tried to think rationally. "I'm, ah, not sure of my schedule."

"Tomorrow?"

"Yes – tomorrow. Come to the winery after it closes."

His lips brushed against hers, then gently covered her mouth. Lily welcomed him, his spicy scent sending her senses reeling. She placed her hands on his chest and moaned when his lips left hers, blazing kisses over her jaw, and searing a path of pleasure over her neck.

Brattleboro, VT, setting for the Faberge Secret

She bit her lower lip. If she didn't take a chance now, would her life be filled with what- ifs and regrets? Yes, John had hurt her, but she was still alive. Dare she believe in romance again?
Dimitri paused next to her room, beside the door.
"If you have the time..." she began, knowing it was now or never. "And if you don't have to go back to Russia right away, I'd be honored to have you share Christmas with my family."
"I'd be happy to." His gaze was as soft as a caress. He reached out and tucked a stray tendril of hair behind her ear. Then slowly, he curved his hand around the nape of her neck and moved closer so there was no space between them.
Their lips skirted each other's, teasing, tempting... until Dimitri's mouth finally captured hers in a drugging kiss.
His lips were firm and persuasive. He smelled of soap and sandalwood. Something intense flared within her, and she fisted her hands around the lapels of his coat. Her body betrayed her desire. His erection pressed against her thigh.
All of a sudden, an all-crushing fear consumed her. He was hard for her. It was too soon, too fast. She broke the kiss and pushed him away.
"Elise--" Dimitri began.
"Umph!"

Elise's heart jumped. She swung around and looked at the door.

It stood ajar.

"Lucy!" Elise forgot all about Dimitri's kiss and rushed inside with him right behind her.
Concern spiked within her the second she saw Lucy.

Her friend's hands and feet were tied to a chair, and a gag was in her mouth. The room
had been trashed. Their suitcases had been turned over; their clothes and books tossed haphazardly about.
Fear knotted inside Elise. She rushed to the chair and took off Lucy's gag. Dimitri untied the knots at Lucy's feet, concern for her friend evident in his eyes. Elise was thrilled that Dimitri had helped her with no hesitation or reservations.
"What happened?" Elise asked. "Who did this?"
"They were looking for the egg," Lucy said. She glanced at Dimitri, but instead of her earlier resistance to him, gratefulness filled her gaze.
Dimitri froze and glanced up, his stare drilling into Elise. "Egg? A Faberge egg?"
Elise loosened one of the ropes around Lucy's hand and looked at Dimitri, perplexed. "What do you know about Faberge eggs?"
He muttered something in Russian, finished untying the knot around Lucy's other ankle, and stood, straightening his shoulders.
"That's what I lost. What I've been looking for -- my Faberge egg."

Adventures in Strawberry Land

Hello Night Owls,

Popping in for a bit to share some pics from the Strawberry Festival.  It was held back in May, I want to say 20-21, but it's always the 3rd weekend of May.  It's been a while, but I love to go every year.  It's held in Oxnard, CA and every year the event keeps getting bigger.  I remember the first year I went, the arts and crafts were held on the grass at Oxnard College but now they shut down the adjacent street and hold the arts and crafts there.  My, how things have changed!

This weekend the weather was great.  It wasn't too hot, but then we went after work.  We got there around 430 pm and closed the place down at 6. Tip:  Go later on in the day.  It wasn't as crowded during this time as it usually is, (as we've gone earlier in the past) and it was a lot cooler.

Here are some typical food booths.  Of course, I'm a sucker for the garlic fries, but we got calamari and I spilt a Philly cheesesteak with Andrew.  Joe is picky so I'm sure we got him chicken nuggets.  They also sell Strawberry nachos, Strawberry beer, and Straweberry tacos.

The boys drinking their strawberry smoothies, 2017.  Smoothies are the best part of the Strawberry Festival.

Posting next to all the Strawberry sellers. Every year the strawberries are always fresh and tasty.  You never get a bad strawberry at the festival.  They have shortcake making contests.  Unfortunately, due to time, I missed visiting "Strawberry Shortcake" this year.

This is a picture of the boys drinking smoothies from 2013. Boy have they changed!  They've certaintly gotten bigger.

Here is me with my gratitious basket of strawberries.  We can't eat them fast enough when we get come.  I'm wearing the Angels hat because it's red and I wanted something red for the festival.

Thanks for hanging out with me at the festival.  Sorry I'm late.  If you get a chance, check out my Christmas story, Mr. Christmas Elf, for a little Christmas in July. It's 99 cents and will be going away at the end of August.  Now is the time to get it!

BLURB:

Jules' Christmas list is looking pretty pathetic. She needs a new muffler for her car and a hundred dollars for her root canal. Her niece is asking for an iPad, but all Jules can afford is a Barbie doll. The peppermint on the top? Her boyfriend dumps her in a text message.

Jules could use a little Christmas magic, so when Elvis pops up claiming that he was sent by Santa to fill her Christmas list, all she has to do is believe – in the magic the season has to offer.

Christmas in July: 99 cents romance: Mr. Christmas Elf #ChristmasinJuly

Enjoy a little Christmas in July with Mr. Christmas Elf! Only 99 cents.

BLURB:

ENJOY THIS EXCERPT:
"So you're the one with the depressing Christmas list."
"Hey, I can't believe you're insulting me and we just met."
He held his hands palms up. They were nice hands with smooth palms and lean fingers.
"No insult intended, but usually people don't ask for mufflers and scratchers. Can I walk you in?"
"Sure." It was easy to forgive him, especially with that irresistible dimple. I adjusted my purse on my shoulder and proceeded toward the door. Elvis kept his hand in the small of my back, helping to steady my shaky legs. Comforting warmth spread up my back. My muscles relaxed. I liked everything about Elvis. He was tall and lean, with a kind smile, full lips, and amazing white teeth.
Joe stood guarding the door, one eye fixed on his watch, one eye on me. He scowled and twisted the lock to let me in.
Elvis opened the door for me. What a treat! When Vince opened the door, he usually walked in first. I paused and turned around in the doorway, gazing into Elvis' cool, expressive eyes. "Can I buy you a coffee?"
"Absolutely not. A gentleman never lets a lady pay for him."
Joe glared at me. I pointed toward the employee area. "Ah, thank you for catching me back there. I have to sign in now."
"You're welcome."
I rushed off, hung up my purse and put on my 'Cup o' Joe' elf hat before joining Renee at the register.
Renee leaned over and whispered. "Who's the cutie?"
"Elvis." I grinned. I'm sure it was one of those "he's-absolutely-gorgeous" grins that leave you speechless.
"He's a doll."
"Uh-huh."

Christmas in July: 99 cent romance - Mr. Christmas Elf! #christmasinjuly

Enjoy a little Christmas in July with Mr. Christmas Elf! Only 99 cents.

Jules could use a little Christmas magic, so when Elvis pops up claiming that he was sent by Santa to fill her Christmas list, all she has to do is believe – in the magic the season has to offer.

ENJOY THIS EXCERPT:

Dad kissed me goodbye on my way out the door to catch the bus. Cold air chafed against my cheeks. Snow fell slowly in big fat flakes from puffy gray clouds. They took forever to melt against the glass. At least we were going to have a white Christmas.

The bus slid up to the stop near the coffee shop. I hustled out the door and rushed toward the store, noticing a guy reading the letters to Santa in the window. There were five minutes 'til opening. I didn't want to disappoint Joe again by being late, so I broke into a trot – and slipped on a hunk of ice. The sidewalk was coming up fast, but I fell into the arms of the letter reader.

He smiled one of the most adorable smiles I've ever seen and a cute little dimple popped out in his cheek. "You smell like peppermint," he said.

I opened my mouth, stammered like an idiot, and shut up. Mr. Dimple held me close. I didn't want to move. He owned a very solid body, with unkempt, curly, sandy blond hair that covered his ears and ice blue eyes that pierced my soul. I melted like a snowman in June.

"I'm Elvis."

"Hi, Elvis." I managed to squeak.

He chuckled and helped me to firm footing on the ground. "And you are?"

"Julie Erwin, but everyone calls me Jules."

"So, you're the one with the depressing Christmas list."

"Hey, I can't believe you're insulting me and we just met."

Christmas in July: 99 cent contemporary romance: Christmas in Bayuex #christmasinjuly

Travel to Bayeux, France and enjoy this snippet from my 99 cent Christmas romance, "Christmas in Bayeux."

BLURB:

The ravages of war have taken their toll on Aiden. Seeking peace, he has traveled to Bayeux, France, on a pilgrimage of sorts. Noel, a former exchange student who spent time with his family years before, provides him a place to stay at the old manor she has turned into an inn.

The attraction they felt nine years before at the tender age of sixteen flares to life as they spend time together and prepare the inn for Christmas. But there has been so much loss and grief for Aiden.
Will Noel be able to help him feel again and can Aiden find what he is searching for?

ENJOY THIS EXCERPT:

Aiden walked the length to the tapestry, marveling at the story and how the work had been well preserved for close to 1,000 years.

"Edward the Confessor had no heir so he sent Harold to tell William he would rule England once Edward died. Harold, however, usurped the throne."

Aiden pointed to a star with a tail. "Is that a star?"

She grinned. "Modern interpretation believes it to be Haley's comet. It was a bad omen for Harold."

"What happened next?"

Noel giggled. "William conquered him."

"Silly me. I should have known that." He grabbed her waist and pulled her against him. Their eyes locked, hers smoldering with desire. Damn. He wanted to kiss her. Right now. Screw his willpower. Aiden grabbed her hand and led her to the nearest hallway. Empty, thank God.

He pressed her against the wall, his hard body molding against her curves, and claimed her lips with a hungry, demanding kiss.

She didn't fight him or pull away. He squeezed her waist with his hands, and she fisted his shirt in her hands, keeping him close.

Her lips were warm and pliant, as demanding as his. He traced his tongue against the soft fullness of her lips and they parted for him. Aiden's tongue explored the recesses of her mouth and he groaned. He was getting hard for her. In a damn museum. That thought was like a bucket of water on his unchecked kiss and he pulled away, gasping for breath.

Christmas in July: 1.99 contemporary romance - The Faberge Secret #ChristmasinJuly

Enjoy this snippet from my 1.99 Christmas romance, "The Faberge Secret."

BLURB:

Elise Goodwin operates a heritage museum in Brattleboro, Vermont. Needing to buy some items for her museum, she travels to Boston and acquires a delicious surprise that would excite any curator – a Faberge Egg.
Enter Russian businessman Dimitri Romanov, the true owner of the jewel. He's following a lead hoping to reacquire his stolen egg when he bumps into Elise. He can't hide his attraction to the petite brunette with doe-like eyes.
Dimitri's rival, Gustav Kelch, wants the rare Faberge jewel and will do anything to find it, including destroying Dimitri's life. Can Dimitri keep Elise and his Faberge heirloom safe or will his attraction place their lives in jeopardy?
This excerpt: Elise shows Dimitri her history museum.

ENJOY THIS EXCERPT:
The air between them grew thick with worry, and Dimitri thought it would be best to lighten it. "The museum has an old fashioned feel to it. Do I get a tour?"

"All right." She unlocked the door with her key and led him inside. She made sure to lock the door after them. "The museum is closed for the week because of the holidays."

Dimitri nodded and walked around the wide, spacious main room. Elise was proud of her exhibits. She had a colonial kitchen, an old flag of Vermont, a tobacco exhibit, a bedroom, and several period costumes. The museum also contained displays of postcards, books about colonial New England, and a few souvenir gifts for sale.

"Did you do this yourself?" he asked.

She smiled. "I did. I received a grant from the University of Vermont, so I'm affiliated with them, but this is all mine."

"You should be proud of your work. I want to take you to the Imperial Romanov museum in St. Petersburg. I know you'll appreciate it."

She was thrilled to know he wanted to show her his world. "I look forward to it. We have to go through the back to get to the stairs to my apartment."

Dimitri followed her through a door that led to the back. The room contained various boxes and several artifacts. The scent of leather hung in the air. They went through a second door and reached a hallway. Elise climbed the steps and unlocked the door to her apartment. Dimitri followed her.

"It's small, but I'm happy with it. The living room has a view of Main Street, the kitchen's to the rear, and my bedroom's down the hall. The bathroom is in here." Elise pointed to the first door in the hallway.

Dimitri walked to the bay windows and peered out. Elise stepped up beside him. The street lamps had come on. Passersby shuffled down the road.

"Main Street doesn't really quiet down until nine. People are still out doing their Christmas shopping," Elise said.

"I will have to go shopping for you tomorrow."

She smiled her pleasure, delighted he wanted to get her a Christmas gift. During moments like this, she believed Dimitri really wanted her -- and not just because she had his egg. "I like Bath and Body, I'm a sucker for movie tickets, and I won't turn down my birthstone."

He placed his overnight bag in a chair next to the window. "And that would be?"

"A pearl. I was born in June."

"June what?"
"The seventh."

Amusement flickered in his eyes. "I was born on November seventh."

She smiled. "I just might have to get you a belated present since we're... dating."

"Well, I like to collect calendars from different places, wearing scarves, and I wouldn't

mind having an e-reader," Dimitri said.

"I'll keep that mind. Do you want the couch or the bed?"

"I would never sleep in a lady's bed unless she asked me to." His blue eyes probed her to her soul. Damn if tingling didn't begin in the pit of her stomach.

"Ah, I'm not quite ready for that."

"Then the couch it is."

"I'll call for take-out. Do you like Italian?" He eased into a smile. "That's fine."

Christmas in July: 99 cent romance: Gifts #christmasinjuly

Enjoy this snippet from my 99 cent sweet Christmas romance, "Gifts," featuring Jimmy Thomas on the cover.

BLURB:

Figure skating is in Christian Jansen's blood. When he trips on uneven ice and drops his partner, Chris breaks his arm. Now he's looking for a second chance.

Famke deVries lost her skating coach four months ago. Needing to connect with her roots, she returns to Amsterdam and agrees to be Christian's new skating partner.

Christian and Famke connect on a deep level, understanding each other's losses, but will their chemistry off the ice interfere with their goal to go to the Olympics?

ENJOY THIS EXCERPT:

He said nothing, only stared at her, and she knew she would have to give something of herself first.

"Stephen sacrificed a lot when I went to train in the States. He put our father in a care facility and I know that wasn't a decision he made lightly. You were there for him and I appreciate that."

A spark of some indefinable emotion grew in his eyes. He drew in a long breath. "About a year ago, I had my partner in an overhead lift and stumbled on some uneven ice. She fell."
"Was she all right?"

"Yes, but her blade cut my arm, breaking it. I suffered a sprained ankle, too. I spent several weeks recovering and in physical therapy. During that time, Katrien left me." His voice resonated with the same sadness Famke had seen earlier. A sudden thought came to her.

"Does Katrien have red hair?"

"Yes." He paused. "She was at the rink the first time you met Maks."

"I thought so. Look, Chris, I'm not going to leave you."

He raised an eyebrow.
"I mean it." Her voice was firm. "I'm not leaving you."

"Why?" His voice dropped in volume.
"Because you didn't leave my brother."

"He's my friend."

Famke reached out and wrapped her arms around him, giving him a fierce hug. He returned the embrace. She felt his muscles relax a bit and he pulled away, finding her eyes.

"I'm staying right here." Famke mouthed, as her eyes grew moist.

He cupped her cheek and his thumb lightly stroked her jaw. "Thank you," he whispered.

Famke leaned close. Chris lowered his head and she sealed her promise with a kiss near his lips, afraid if they actually kissed, she'd break the last professional barrier between them.
