Book Review Tuesday: Dark Days of Promise by Shaunna Gonzales #bookreview

Book Review for: Dark Days of Promise
Written by: Shaunna Gonzales
Desert Breeze Publishing
ISBN: 978-1-61252-218-0
Avail as: ebook
4 Stars

Genres: Contemporary, women's fiction, inspirational, romance

Gonzales pens a story that will tug on your heartstrings with "Dark Days of Promise." Vicki Laramie is struggling to raise three children when she learns her ex-husband is killed in Iraq. Kelly Chase has just left the Army and suffers from PTSD. Can they help each other through their dark days to find happiness?

The story opens with a realistic look at Vicki's struggles. Thankfully, her neighbor, Janine, gives her the emotional and steadfast support Vicki needs to get by. Enter Janine's son, Kelly. He's just left military service, but finds adjustment to civilian life a challenge. Despite their attraction, Vicki and Kelly are challenged at every turn. When something traumatic happens to both of them, will it prove to be the turning point both of them need to move on with their lives?

Gonzales' writing style is easy to read and she handles the first person narrative well. The plot moves at a nice clip.

The best part of the novel is how Gonzales taps into emotions. Phillip is the teenager you want to ground for life, yet he's sympathetic as well, searching for the one person to help "ground" him.  Vicki is honest and real and raw. Kelly struggles with issues many do upon returning from war. The supporting cast is just as endearing. Gonzales isn't afraid to show us their strengths, vulnerabilities, and weaknesses.

The story has a spiritual element, but doesn't come off as "preachy." In fact, Gonzales does an excellent job showing the power of faith in a very natural way. The story is sweet for romance readers, with the main characters holding hands and kissing. In fact, it was nice to read a "sweet" romance that didn't feel forced. Overall, "Dark Days of Promise" offers hope in the face of adversity and is a heartwarming story. I highly recommend it.

Guest Author Series -Q&A with Author Theresa Stillwagon

Theresa is a fellow author with me at Desert Breeze and has a release out this month, "Saving Pale Moon." She's here today to talk about her story. Welcome, Theresa.

STEPH: How long have you been writing?

THERESA: I started way back in my teens. I remember I started writing a historical set in the West. I wrote it long hand and never finished it. All I remember about it was the beginning. She was on a train, thinking about why she was on the train. I didn't write 'the end' on a book until the mid1980s.

STEPH: What attracts you to romance writing?

THERESA: I've always read them. Romances are empowering. The main characters go through so many things, but they always manage to resolve them and get their happy ever after. Real life isn't always that way.

STEPH: Where do you find inspiration for your stories?

THERESA: I find my inspiration everywhere I look. I can sit in a restaurant and watch people and come up with characters, or a possible plot. LIstening to people, watching tv, and reading have given me ideals. Once I even dreamed a major scene and I built a story around it.

But I think my inspiration comes mostly from the secondary characters of my finished books. Just about everyone of them has at least one person screaming at me to write their story.

STEPH: Tell us a little about Saving Pale Moon.

THERESA: Jessica Callaway isn’t happy. Maybe meeting her birth mother now would be a good thing.

And it would be if only for her brother.

Blake Hunter doesn’t trust her. Why is she here now, after finding out about Abby twenty years ago? She does look like his adopted mother, but he plans on keeping a cool head until the verifying blood tests are done.

Jessie senses his distrust, but she is still way too aware of him. The mere sound of his voice sets her on edge. When her birth mother tells her Blake is adopted, she relaxes her guard and decides to enjoy her time in Texas . With all the horses surrounding her, especially Pale Moon, she’s in heaven.

Unfortunately Blake isn’t as accepting as the other Hunters.

Has she done the right thing coming to Texas ? Or has Jessie made the biggest mistake of her life?

STEPH: How long did it take to write?

THERESA: I had the ideal for this book for a long while before I actually started writing it. I've lived with these sisters for about fifteen years. I let them go when I couldn't sell the original first book to the series. Jessie stayed in my head all those years so I finally sat down and started writing her story. I don't remember the actually date, but I finished it way back in 2007. It went through a lot of changes since then.

STEPH: Did you have to do a lot of research for the story?

THERESA: No, not really. I did do some research on dude ranches and horses.

STEPH: What's the theme of Saving Pale Moon?

THERESA: I think it letting go and learning how to trust.

STEPH: Cast the characters? Who are the leads for Saving Pale Moon?

THERESA: Jessie Callaway is the heroine. She needs to find answers to question her adopted parents can't help her with so she decides to meet her birth mother. Life hasn't been treating her well lately. More than just possible health problems have convinced her to come to the ranch.

Blake Hunter is her birth mother's adopted son. He doesn't believe her reasoning for coming to the ranch now, when things are looking up for the Hunters. He doesn't want to get involved with her because he thinks he's like his abusive birth father. This is the main reason he doesn't want to trust her.

STEPH: Tell us a little about the state you live in.

THERESA: Right now I live in Georgia. My husband and I just moved here half a year or so ago, but I love the area. We live in an RV, in a campground in Savannah. The city is beautiful with a lot of history. We haven't really had a chance to see much of it yet but we plan on taking one of the bus tours of the city. And I'd love to do a ghost tour.

STEPH: Do you have an ebook reader? If so, which one?

THERESA: No, not yet. My birthday is coming up in May so I'm hoping my husband will get me a Kindle. I do so want one. It'll be so much easier curling up with an ebook reader. Right now I have to read all my books on the laptop.

STEPH: What's your writing space like?

THERESA: The kitchen table. We live in an RV so we have very limited space.

Theresa Stillwagon has been writing most of her life. Since one of her teachers praised a poem she wrote for a class assignment, she's been putting words together in the hopes of seeing them in print. Not caring if anyone other than herself ever read them. Her dream came to reality in 2008 when she signed her first writing contract. She's now just signed her fourth one, the first story in a series of five called The Sisters Callaway.

A former resident of the state of Ohio, Theresa now lives in her RV in the sunny city of Savannah, Georgia, with her husband of twenty-eight years and her two cats, Fred and Barney. Excerpt - Destination: Berlin

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Stuck in a routine job in Cold War Germany guarding nuclear weapons. U.S. Army Corporal Sharon Cates thinks she is going to Berlin to attend an orientation tour. Unknown to her, the briefcase she carries contains top-secret information that the Stasi and KGB are willing to kill for.

Russian Junior Sergeant Dimitri Nagory is an assistant to a high-ranking Soviet officer in his country’s embassy in England. Dimitri isn’t expecting a great adventure as she boards the duty train for a routine trip to headquarters in Berlin, and he certainly isn’t expecting to meet any Americans.

The Stasi derail the train in the middle of East Germany, expecting to take the information from Sharon’s dead body, but when the sudden explosion hurls Sharon and Dimitri from the train and into each other’s arms, can they find their way to Berlin before the Stasi do?

EXCERPT:

Spies. Espionage. Danger. The Berlin duty train hinted at it all, as it carried the four allies between the West and occupied Berlin. Corporal Sharon Cates was high on the potential thrill, but her military common sense kept her anchored to the fact that hints rarely ever gave way to facts.

She walked through the doors and into the duty train’s dining car, wearing her class “A” uniform. It was relatively empty. A lone concession window was open selling coffee and brötchen. She bought a cup and sat down next to a window. It was dark outside, and she couldn’t see much. Glancing at her watch, she saw that it was two o’clock. Sharon knew she should be asleep, but she was too excited. Soon she’d be in Berlin, and she was thrilled. Going to Berlin would be stepping into living history. She put her briefcase on the table and took out a guidebook to Berlin, thumbing through it as she drank her coffee.

A faint creak pierced the air. When Sharon looked up, she spied a Soviet soldier also buying a cup of coffee. A warm shiver slid down her spine. After all, she knew the Soviets also used the duty train; she just thought she’d never see one. He was tall and filled out his uniform well. From the markings on his uniform, she gathered he was a non-commissioned officer, but that was all. To her surprise, he approached her booth.

“Good morning, Corporal. I am Junior Sergeant Dimitri Nagory of the Soviet Army. May I join you?”

Sharon looked up. He was talking to her—in English! She motioned to him to have a seat.

Dimitri sat down and smiled. “If you don’t mind my asking, what’s your name, Corporal?”
"Sharon,” she answered, as distantly as possible. She never thought she’d meet a Soviet soldier on the Berlin Duty Train. This felt like a page out of a LeCarre spy novel. “Sharon Cates.”

“Is this your first time on the duty train?” he asked.

Sharon stared at him. Nosey Soviet. Cpt. Heathers had cautioned her about them during her security briefing.

“Because it is the first time I have seen you,” Dimitri continued, sipping his coffee.

“Ah, yes,” Sharon finally answered. Should she finally entertain those thoughts of espionage and secret spy scenarios? “It’s my first trip to Berlin,” she added.

“I see. Are you attending the Berlin Orientation Tour?”

“How did you know?”

“Most of the Americans I see on the train travel to Berlin for that purpose,” Dimitri explained, grinning.

“If you don’t mind my asking, why are you on the train?” Despite the desire to keep her composure, her lips curved into an inquisitive smile.

“I work in the Soviet embassy in London. My headquarters are in East Berlin. I travel between London and Berlin every two weeks,” he answered.

“And you can tell me that?” she asked, raising a surprised eyebrow.

“It’s common knowledge,” he added.

“Do you make it a habit to talk to Americans on the train?” Sharon asked.

“No, I don’t. I usually sleep in my train car, but I haven’t had much to eat today so they let me out to do that,” he replied.

“Touché,” she said curtly. “So, Jr. Sgt. Nagory, what do you do in your army?”

THE BOOK:
The book is “sweet” by romance standards as Sharon and Dimitri, enemies due to their armies, are forced to rely on each other to get to Berlin.

REVIEWS:
A tautly written military adventure.” – Midwest Book Review

There's a little bit of everything mixed into this story. There's history, adventure, suspense, romance and of course so military jargon. The author does a good job though, of simplifying the military lingo, so that it never becomes a burden to understand. The story flows well, and moves along quickly. If you're looking for a good story to keep you occupied for a night or two, I'd highly recommend this one. – Book of the Moment Reviewer
