4.99 Kindle Middle School book: 1st Flag of New Hampshire #kindledeal #childrensbook

4.99 Middle School Book:  1st Flag of New Hampshire
Recommended for ages: 9-13

NOTE: Author Stephanie Burkhart is interviewed by Author Regina Andrews about the 1st Flag of New Hampshire.  This interview was originally published in APR 2012.

BLURB:

It’s the start of the school year, and Alyssa has to take American Studies for college prep. She’s paired with classmate Miguel De Soto to find the first flag of New Hampshire, but the flag has only flown four times in New Hampshire’s past. Can Alyssa and Miguel track the flag through history before time is up?

REGINA'S INTERVIEW:

REGINA: I'd like to welcome fellow author, Stephanie Burkhart, here to kick off her blog tour for her latest YA/MS release, "First Flag of New Hampshire."

STEPH: I'm so excited to be here, Gina. I've done several blog tours now and I've noticed I always start off my tours by visiting your blog in little Rhode Island first so I was glad for the opportunity to do so again.

REGINA: You're welcome! Tell us about the book.

STEPH: Alyssa and Miguel are high school seniors at Central High in Manchester, NH. As part of their assignment for American Studies, they're tasked to find out the four times in NH history when the first flag flew and where it is now. Their friends, Greg and Karen, challenge them to a friendly race, adding a sense of urgency to the project.

REGINA: What was the inspiration behind the plot?

STEPH: My American Studies class. I rarely get inspiration from dreams, as I'm a very heavy sleeper. It's funny, I can still remember sitting in the class and my teachers, Mrs. Hussey and Mr. Lord saying this would be a class that would stay with us the rest of our lives. At the time, I was 17 and just laughed, but they were right. At the end of the school year, I knew this class would resonate with me.

REGINA: How long ago was American Studies?

STEPH: 25 years. Can you believe that?

REGINA: Is there really a 'first' flag of New Hampshire?

STEPH: Not really, but I wanted to write a young adult/middle school mystery so I made up the first flag. What I was striving to do was seamlessly blend fact and fiction and I hope I've done that.

REGINA: How long did it take you to write?

STEPH: About a month including the research.

REGINA: How did you come to pick the setting?

STEPH: I grew up in New Hampshire. It just felt right to me. Actually, this is going to be a series. Alyssa and Miguel are going to visit all 6 New England states solving mysteries along the way.

REGINA: What are Alyssa's strengths? Weaknesses?

STEPH: She's determined and focused. Alyssa has a plan. I would say when a wrench gets thrown into her plan, it takes her a bit to work through it.

REGINA: What does Miguel like about Alyssa?

STEPH: Miguel finds her kind with a pleasant disposition. Her determination and focus helps him do the same. His ability to work through a problem helps her do the same.

REGINA: Who did the illustrations?

STEPH: Ginger Nielson. Ginger is a true blessing. She's from New Hampshire, as well. I love how her illustrations bring Aly and Miguel to life. They're perfect!

REGINA: How long have you been writing?

STEPH: About 10 years now.

REGINA: What do you find rewarding about young adult writing?

STEPH: The ability to inspire others – especially young adults and children -  to read. I love watching young people embrace a good story.

Now available as an ebook: 1st Flag of New Hampshire #middleschoolfiction

Now available as an Ebook for 4.99: First Flag of New Hampshire.  It's a children's middle school fiction book, grades 5-9.

BLURB: It’s the start of the school year, and Alyssa has to take American Studies for college prep. She’s paired with classmate Miguel De Soto to find the first flag of New Hampshire, but the flag has only flown four times in New Hampshire’s past. Can Alyssa and Miguel track the flag through history before time is up?

5 SHORT QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS FOR STEPHANIE:

#1: What inspired you to write the story?

STEPHANIE: I wanted to write a mystery story involving two young sleuths so I took a page out of my own background and routed the setting in Manchester, New Hampshire.  Aly and Miguel are honor students taking an honors class "American Studies."  It's through this class they're exposed to "American/State" mysteries.  The first book is Flag Flag of New Hampshire.

#2: How long did it take?

STEPHANIE: It took between 4-6 weeks.

#3: Why set the story in New Hampshire?

STEPHANIE: I come from the area so I'm familiar with it.  I did some research and discovered New Hampshire has a rich colonial history that was fun to tap into.

#4: What makes this book special? Did you pick the illustrator?

STEPHANIE: There's plenty of mystery.  It will appeal to a wide, young middle school audience. No, 4RV picked the illustrator. I think Ginger Nelson did a fanstastic job capturing Aly, Miguel and appeal of autumn.

#5: How long have you been writing for 4RV Publishing.

STEPHANIE: Since 2010. My 1st children's book was "The Giving Meadow," and just recently, "Brady's Lost Blanket" was published.

5 Stars, Amazon Customer, Amazon Review:  The story was fast paced, fresh, and I learned a lot about the first flag of New Hampshire.

Book Review for: The Battle of the Labyrinth

Book Review for: The Battle of the Labyrinth
Written by: Rick Riordan
Disney/Hyperion
ISBN: 978-142-310149-9
Avail: print and ebook
4 Stars

Riordan's imagination soars as high as Icarus with this installment of the Percy Jackson Series – The Battle of the Labyrinth. Percy's a freshman in high school now, but his summer at Camp Half-Blood promises to keep him on his toes. There's new friends, new foes, a new quest, and as the danger grows closer, Percy discovers trust can be complicated.

The story opens with Percy attending high school orientation at his new school. Immediately, he meets up with his mortal friend, Rachel Elizabeth Dare and is attacked by demon cheerleaders, the empousa. Percy wins the day and finds his way to Camp Half Blood where he learns about Daedalus' Labyrinth. It still exists and there's a secret entrance to Camp Half Blood. If Luke finds it, then Kronos and his minions are sure to attack. Percy's friend, Annabeth, gets to lead a quest into the Labyrinth, but everyone on the journey has an agenda. Will Grover find Pan? Can Percy and Annabeth find Daedalus? Will Nico, the son of Hades, prove himself friend or foe? Has Kronos gained enough strength to take human form? Percy and his friends can only hope for the best.

Riordan opens the novel with Percy and Rachel battling the demon cheerleaders. The action grabs the reader and the mystery of the Labyrinth keeps them turning the page. The plot moves at a good clip. Riodan's writing is sharp, witty, and easy to read.

As with Riordan's other books in the series, he continues to bring the ancient Greek heroes and their stories to life in a way modern readers can related to. Riordan's creativity shines.

The characters are very likable. Percy is easy to relate to. He's a great friend, heroic, and always does the right thing despite his challenges. Annabeth, Grover, and Rachel each have very human elements that allow them to connect with readers.

The Battle of the Labyrinth is fast paced and breathtaking. Readers 9 years-old and up will enjoy this book. It can be read as a stand alone, but it fits into the series nicely. I highly recommend this story to all who enjoy young adult and middle school novels.

****

I am really enjoying reading the Percy Jackson series with my son Andrew. Anyone else enjoyed/enjoying the series? Sign in if your a Percy Jackson fan!

Smiles
Steph

Announcing my NEW Release - First Flag of New Hampshire

Now available through 4RV Publishing: First Flag of New Hampshire.

This is a MS/YA (Middle School/Young Adult) story set in New England. Believe it or not, I was inspired by the American Studies I took as a Junior in High School (1984-1985). It was a two period class that blended American History and Literature. I can still remember my teachers' names - Mr. Lord taught History and Mrs. Hussey taught Literature. At the beginning of the year, both of the teachers said it was a class you wouldn't forget, and I didnt. We did various simulations and on our first simulation, I was a member of the Continential Congress and it was our job to determine if we were going to declare our Independance from England. Surprise, Surprise, our Continential Congress did not declare war on England. I was very proud to be a tory judge that year.

We also went on a field trip to Newport, RI that year and visited the mansions built by the turn of the century nouveau riche, the Vanderbuilts and Astors to name a few. I fell in love with Newport that year.

American Studies is still inspiring me, even 25 years after the class.
